So, we need to get caught up on the backstory. Late 2018 I had been experiencing stomach pains and cramps. Only happened now and again, no rhyme or reason as to why. I put it down to something I ate or something I drank etc. And me being me, I didn't go to my GP. For the record, I rarely go to my GP: I think once in the past 5 years. I just don't get sick enough to warrant it.
Mid January, same thing happens. This time more painful, with the bonus of vomiting through the night. Nice stuff. My wife suggested this time i need to visit my GP, so the following morning I head over there.
Explaining pain and nausea to the doctor, when you are neither in pain, nor feeling nauseous, made me feel somewhat of a fraud. But, he was concerned enough to send me off for an ultrasound. The ultrasound turned up images of what appeared to be an enlarged appendix, and I was scheduled for an appendectomy 2 days later.
The surgery was a success, in so much that they got the appendix out. The surgeon did speak to my wife, and made the comment "it didn't look like we were expecting": in hindsight, this should have started the alarm bells ringing.
Recovery from the operation was all good, I was back on my feet, back at work, and aside from the discomfort of the surgical incisions, was not in pain. I got the call that the pathology had come back, and I headed back to the hospital to meet with the surgeon.
It was very much a case of "do you want the bad news or the bad news?". The bad news is we have removed a perfectly healthy appendix, and the bad news is we still have no idea what is wrong with you.
So, the next step was a colonoscopy, scheduled for 15 March. And there we are, all caught up.
